Speech Therapy Mississauga
Speech Therapy Mississauga for children, teens, adults and seniors — supporting speech, language, literacy, stuttering, autism-related communication, voice, swallowing, stroke, acquired brain injury and more.
CHILDREN + TEENS
ADULTS + SENIORS
From first words to complex conversations, communication keeps changing.
Speech-language pathology can support far more than pronunciation. Children may need help understanding language, expressing ideas, reading, writing, stuttering or social communication. Adults may seek support after stroke or brain injury, or for voice, swallowing, stuttering, cognitive communication and professional communication.
Language development, speech sounds, stuttering, autism-related communication and AAC.
Children's Services ↗Classroom language, literacy, storytelling, executive functioning and social communication.
Language & Literacy ↗Stroke, aphasia, ABI, voice, swallowing, fluency, accent and workplace communication.
Adult Services ↗More than one language is context — not a disorder.
Mississauga is one of Canada's most multilingual communities. In the 2021 Census, 328,130 Mississauga residents reported a non-official language as a single mother-tongue response.
For bilingual and multilingual children, an SLP should consider language history, exposure, use and communication patterns across languages where possible. Families should not be told to stop using a home language simply because a communication concern exists.
Start with what is difficult in real life.
Parents do not need to know the diagnostic label before contacting an SLP. The most useful starting point is often a situation you can describe clearly.
Following directions and moving through routines.
Using language, taking turns and sharing ideas.
Understanding, reading, writing and explaining.
Speech clarity, stuttering, social communication and repair.
Expressing needs, choices, boundaries and questions.
School language is a hidden workload.
A child can sound conversational in everyday speech and still struggle with the language required to learn. School demands increasingly complex listening, vocabulary, inference, reading comprehension, writing, narrative and social communication.
Communication can change after stroke, injury, illness or life change.
Adults and seniors may seek speech-language pathology for aphasia after stroke, acquired brain injury, cognitive-communication concerns, swallowing, voice, stuttering, Parkinson's-related communication changes, dementia-related changes, accent modification or professional communication.
Sometimes the difficulty is not speech. It is managing communication under load.
After stroke, concussion or acquired brain injury, a person may have difficulty finding words, understanding or organizing language, remembering information, reading, writing, following fast conversations or returning to work and school communication.
Assessment should consider how communication works in the situations that actually matter.
Voice affects more than sound. It affects participation.
Voice therapy may support vocal fatigue, strain, hoarseness or other voice changes. STCC also provides gender-affirming voice therapy for clients who want their voice and communication style to feel more aligned with their identity and personal goals.
For some goals, the therapy room can be your own screen.
STCC provides online speech-language services across Ontario. Virtual care may be appropriate for many assessment, therapy and consultation goals, while other needs may be better addressed in person.
Not simply “is there a problem?” What exactly is getting in the way?
Development, health, education, languages, previous treatment and current priorities.
Conversation, play, speech, language, literacy or other relevant communication tasks.
Home, school, work, relationships, healthcare and community participation.
