Vocal Pitch
Developing a pitch range that feels natural, expressive, and authentically yours. We guide you through evidence-based exercises to safely adjust your fundamental frequency, whether feminising, masculinising, or finding a neutral range that feels right.
Resonance & Voice Quality
Resonance shapes the perceived gender of your voice as much as pitch. Our therapists teach oral and chest resonance techniques that change how your voice is perceived, creating brightness, warmth, or depth depending on your goals.
Intonation & Speech Patterns
The melodies, rhythms, and patterns of speech carry powerful gender cues. We help you explore natural intonation variations, sentence-final patterns, and conversational speech styles that align with how you want to be heard and understood.
Breath Support & Vocal Health
A strong, healthy voice starts with good breath control. We build the physiological foundation your voice needs, ensuring vocal changes are sustainable and that your voice stays healthy, clear, and resilient over time.
Communication Style & Confidence
Voice is more than sound; it includes vocabulary, assertiveness, body language, and how you carry yourself in conversation. We help you build comfort and confidence using your voice in all the spaces and situations of everyday life.
FAQs
1. Who is gender-affirming voice therapy for?
Gender-affirming voice therapy is for anyone who wants their voice to better align with their gender identity. This includes transgender women seeking a more feminine voice, transgender men who want to complement hormone therapy with voice work, non-binary and gender-diverse individuals seeking a neutral or unique voice, and anyone who simply wants more comfort and confidence in how they sound.
2. How long does gender-affirming voice therapy take?
Every individual’s timeline is different. Some clients notice meaningful changes within a few weeks of consistent practice, while others work with their SLP over several months to reach their goals. Factors like your starting voice, your goals, your practice time, and whether you are also on hormone therapy all influence the pace of progress. Your SLP will discuss realistic expectations with you from the start.
3. I’m already on hormone therapy. Do I still need voice therapy?
It depends. For transgender men, testosterone typically lowers vocal pitch naturally over time, though voice therapy can help with resonance, communication style, and navigating the voice change period. For transgender women, estrogen does not typically raise vocal pitch in adults, so voice therapy is often the primary method of achieving a more feminine voice. Our SLPs can discuss what to expect based on your individual situation.
4. Can I do voice therapy online / virtually?
Yes. We offer secure, high-quality telehealth sessions that are just as effective as in-person sessions for most voice therapy goals. Virtual sessions are available to clients anywhere in Ontario, are conducted via secure video conferencing, and are a great option if you live far from one of our GTA clinics, prefer privacy, or simply find virtual sessions more convenient.
5. Is my personal information and voice therapy confidential?
Absolutely. All client information at Speech Therapy Centres of Canada is strictly confidential and governed by professional health privacy standards. Your records, session content, and personal details are never shared without your explicit consent. We are committed to providing a safe space where you can explore your voice without fear or judgment.
6. What happens at my first session?
Your first session is primarily about getting to know you. Your SLP will listen to your story, ask about your voice goals, and conduct a gentle voice assessment to understand your current vocal profile. There is no pressure to perform or produce a specific sound. The goal is simply to begin building a trusting relationship and a clear picture of where to go next.
7. Do I need a referral or diagnosis to access voice therapy?
No referral is required to access gender-affirming voice therapy at Speech Therapy Centres of Canada. You can contact us directly to book a consultation. A referral from a physician or gender clinic may be helpful for insurance purposes, but it is not a requirement to begin therapy with us.
