Assisting transgender individuals in achieving their goals is an important role that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play. SLPs specialize in helping individuals develop communication skills and a voice that aligns with their unique sense of gender. This congruence between inner self and outer expression can lead to increased comfort, confidence, and better function in daily life.

SLPs who work with the transgender population require training, experience, and knowledge of the community’s unique needs. They must also be sensitive to gender identity and expression and provide a supportive and affirming environment. The transgender community faces unique challenges, and it is crucial for SLPs to understand and address them.

Therapy provided by an SLP can significantly contribute to improving the mental health and safety of the transgender community. By affirming gender needs through voice, speech, and language, SLPs can assist individuals in using their voice in a more gender-affirming way, resulting in essential mental health benefits.
